Fish carcass deposition to suppress invasive lake trout through hypoxia causes limited, non‐target effects on benthic invertebrates in Yellowstone Lake

چکیده

Invasive species can have negative effects on native biodiversity and ecosystem function, suppression is often required to minimize the effects. However, management actions suppress invasive may cause negative, unintended non-target taxa. Across United States, lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) are in many freshwater ecosystems, reducing fish abundance diversity through predation competition. In an integrated pest approach, embryos Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, suppressed by depositing carcasses onto spawning sites; reduce dissolved oxygen concentrations as they decay, causing embryo mortality. We conducted a field experiment during one ice-free season at four sites Lake investigate of carcass treatment benthic invertebrates, which could consequences for diets. While overall invertebrate density biomass did not respond treatment, Chironomidae midges Sphaeriidae fingernail clams decreased abundance. Carcass altered community structure based density, but biomass. has spatially localized, some Given small spatial extent within lake, we conclude it unlikely that will alter food availability fishes.

Introduced Lake Trout Produced a Four-Level Trophic Cascade in Yellowstone Lake

—Introduction of lake trout Salvelinus namaycush into a system can add a trophic level, potentially affecting organisms at lower trophic levels. Similar to many lakes and reservoirs in the western United States, lake trout were introduced into Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming. Previous studies showed that lake trout reduced the population and altered the size structure of native Yellowstone cutthroat ...

Yellowstone Lake Nanoarchaeota

Considerable Nanoarchaeota novelty and diversity were encountered in Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park (YNP), where sampling targeted lake floor hydrothermal vent fluids, streamers and sediments associated with these vents, and in planktonic photic zones in three different regions of the lake. Significant homonucleotide repeats (HR) were observed in pyrosequence reads and in near full...

Invasive dreissenid mussels and benthic algae in Lake Michigan: characterizing effects on sediment bacterial communities.

Dreissenid mussels have invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes causing dramatic changes to benthic-pelagic interactions. Despite research on food web impacts, there is limited data on mussel effects on benthic bacterial communities. This study examined effects of dreissenid mussels and benthic algae on sediment bacterial community composition and diversity. Triplicate experimental sediment plus lak...
